Baguio City, Philippines – The University of the Cordilleras (UC) has once again proven its academic prowess as its students clinched first place in the 23rd Northern Luzon Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition (ICFC) held on October 27, 2023.
The competition, organized by the Junior Financial Executives Institutes of the Philippines (JFINEX), aims to promote advanced learning in business and finance among the youth. JFINEX, in partnership with various colleges and universities across the Philippines, strives to professionalize and enhance the competitiveness of students on both national and international stages.

The UC team, composed of Shannen Y. Durante and Dexter S. Daligis, both BSBA Financial Management majors, and Jezze Antoinette S. Padon and Kaycee M. Segundo, both BSA majors, faced numerous challenges from preparation to the competition proper. Despite the lack of specific review topics and the pressure of time management during the competition, the team adapted and overcame these hurdles with strategic planning and teamwork.
“We were given a reviewer but no instruction on what to focus on and no assessment after reviewing,” shared Jezze, Kaycee, Shannen, and Dexter. During the competition, the team had to quickly adjust to the 30-second time limit for problem-solving, which included reading the problem and preparing the solution. The BSA students, trained to use basic calculators, struggled initially with scientific calculators but soon found a way to manage.

The team’s success was also attributed to the unwavering support of their coaches, Mr. John Carlo B. De Leon and Mr. Joe-el S. Mercado, who encouraged them to enjoy the competition and learn from the experience. “No pressure, charge to your learning experience, and enjoy the competition,” they advised.
This victory not only highlights the students’ ability to compete with top universities but also underscores the quality of education at UC. The team’s performance in the competition, despite the short preparation time compared to other schools, showcases their resilience and capability.
On November 24, 2023, the team advanced to the finals held at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), representing the Northern Luzon region. Although they did not secure a spot in the top three, they proudly placed 14th among the top 20 teams.

The students’ reflections on their journey reveal their growth and newfound confidence. “No pressure preparing on your own, expectations not too high and became more effective than another school,” said Shannen. Dexter added, “Explore yourself not to be afraid to take risks and try new things to develop your self-esteem.” Kaycee and Jezze echoed similar sentiments, expressing their surprise at their own capabilities.
The coaches were equally impressed with the team’s performance. “Given the challenges to them, we were surprised, because the team delivered,” said Mr. De Leon and Mr. Marcelo. This achievement is a testament to the University of the Cordilleras’ commitment to excellence, not just in representing the institution but in striving for the highest standards in all endeavors.
