BENGUET, Philippines — In a heartwarming demonstration of compassion and community action, the University of the Cordilleras Junior Financial Executives (UC JFINEX) spearheaded the 2024 Stray Dogs and Check-Up Initiative Program, rescuing and rehabilitating 65 stray dogs on September 23, 2024, in Asin, Tuba, Benguet.
The initiative, led by UC JFINEX Officers and guided by advisers Joe-el S. Marcel, MBA, John Carlo B. De Leon, MBA, and Rene Rose B. Flores, MBA from the College of Business Administration, aimed to provide medical care, emotional healing, and a renewed chance at life for neglected animals. With the support of Furvent Animal Rescues and Pet Medico Veterinary Clinic, the dogs were transferred from the Baguio City Pound to a sanctuary where they received immediate veterinary attention and holistic rehabilitation.

A New Beginning for Stray Dogs
Upon arrival at the sanctuary, each dog was met with warmth and care by student volunteers and veterinary professionals. The transition was carefully managed to ensure the animals received proper nourishment, medical treatment, and emotional support. The transformation was profound dogs once living in uncertainty began to thrive in an environment of safety and compassion.
This initiative was more than a rescue mission; it was a call to action. Organizers emphasized the importance of viewing stray animals not as public nuisances but as sentient beings deserving of dignity and care. Through educational outreach and community engagement, the program encouraged responsible pet ownership and support for animal welfare efforts.
Advocacy Beyond Rescue
The program also served as a platform to promote humane treatment of animals and responsible pet ownership. It highlighted the deep connection between human and animal well-being and called for policies that protect animal rights and promote ethical treatment.
The collaboration between UC JFINEX, Furvent Animal Rescues, and Pet Medico Veterinary Clinic showcased the power of teamwork and empathy in addressing societal issues. Their collective efforts not only changed the lives of the rescued dogs but also raised the ethical standards of the community.
Supporting Global Sustainability Goals
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land, which advocates for the protection and sustainable management of terrestrial ecosystems. Specifically, the program contributes to:
- Target 15.5 – Taking urgent action to reduce habitat degradation and prevent species extinction.
- Target 15.9 – Integrating biodiversity values into local initiatives and planning.
- Target 15.A – Mobilizing resources for the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems.
By addressing animal welfare at the grassroots level, the UC JFINEX team demonstrated how local actions can support global sustainability efforts.
A Lasting Impact
The 2024 Stray Dogs and Check-Up Initiative Program stands as a testament to the power of empathy, education, and action. It reflects the unwavering commitment of UC JFINEX Officers, their advisers, and their partners to create a more compassionate and responsible society.
As the rescued dogs embark on their new journey, the initiative continues to inspire. Organizers hope to expand their efforts, encouraging more individuals and institutions to adopt, volunteer, educate, and advocate for animal welfare.
