By:Joe-el S. Marcelo

The University of the Cordilleras continues to elevate its instructional standards as faculty members participated in the Workshop on English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), held recently at American Corner Baguio, Saint Louis University, Baguio City.

Organized by the Regional English Language Office (RELO) – Manila of the U.S. Department of State, this intensive training brought together academic leaders and educators from across the Cordillera region, as well as participants from Pampanga and Batangas. Representing the College of Business Administration (CBA) was our very own Dr. Joe-el S. Marcelo, who joined fellow professors in mastering advanced pedagogical techniques to strengthen English instruction across diverse academic contexts.

Advanced Teaching Tracks & Highlights:

  • Active Learning & Engagement: The workshop featured sessions on Total Physical Response (TPR) and collaborative group work to foster deeper student participation in the classroom.
  • The Flipped Classroom: Educators explored digital applications that support pre-class learning, allowing for more interactive and practical engagement during class hours.
  • Backward Design & Lesson Blueprinting: Under the guidance of Prof. Laura Roach, participants utilized American literature model texts to develop lesson plans that progress from basic comprehension to high-level critical analysis.
  • Authentic Assessment: The training emphasized a holistic approach to evaluation, focusing on formative, summative, and self/peer assessments to encourage collaborative reflection.

By engaging in these high-level international workshops, UC-CBA ensures that its faculty members are equipped with global best practices, directly enhancing the quality of business education and preparing our students for a globalized professional world.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

UC-CBA’s participation in the EMI workshop reflects our commitment to the following Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Goal 4: Quality Education
    • Indicator 4.3.3: Vocational training events (lifelong learning). This professional development ensures our faculty remains at the cutting edge of global pedagogical standards, improving the overall quality of higher education.
  • Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
    • Indicator 17.2.4: Collaboration for SDG best practice. Through international collaboration with the U.S. Department of State’s RELO, UC shares and develops international best practices to tackle educational challenges in a globalized landscape.
